LVMC defines adult literacy as the ability to read, write and speak confidently; to compute and solve problems; to use technology in order to become a life-long learner; and to be effective in the family, workplace and community. Literacy is a range of tools that help people help themselves- and their children. It is not an end in itself, but a means to a better quality of life.

Toward this goal, LVMC trains and supports volunteer tutors who provide direct instruction in Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language, and other skills.

Many adults with low level reading or speaking skills are reluctant to return to a classroom situation. However, in a one-to-one or small group setting, they find learner -centered instruction suited to their needs and comfort level.

We generally accept adults who are 18 and older and who are no longer in high school. Among speakers of other languages, emphasis is placed on the newcomer whose need for English is urgent.

Our services are provided free of charge to all students.
