            "Changing lives through literacy"

Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County (LVMC) believes that the ability to read and write is critical to personal freedom and the maintenance of a democratic society.  The mission of LVMC, therefore, is to promote increased literacy for adults in Monmouth County through the effective use of volunteers and in collaboration with individuals, groups and organizations desiring to foster increased literacy.

As such, Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County is committed to:

            • Enabling American adults lacking basic literacy skills to achieve their potential through one-to-one or small group instruction.
            • Assisting immigrants to learn our language and culture, so that they may become useful and productive members of our society.
            • Training, supervising and supporting LVMC's volunteer tutors and students.
            • Strengthening and improving LVMC's capacity to provide literacy instruction and services to communities throughout Monmouth County.

Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County provides tutoring and other educational services to adults desiring increased literacy skills in either Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language (ESL).  We also work to encourage and partner with other organizations and individuals that are committed to a literate society.

LVMC’s volunteers, supported by professional staff, serve as tutors, tutor-trainers, office assistants, board members, special events planners, public relations speakers and in many other functions necessary to the achievement of our mission.

Our society is dependent upon an informed citizenry.  The ability to read is necessary to being informed and, as our culture becomes more complex and dependent on technology, literacy becomes ever more basic to survival and the achievement of one’s potential.
