WRITING A STORY USING SIGHT WORDS
This approach allows the student to see and practice sight words in different
contexts. If kept on a computer, the story can be varied from
time to time if the
tutor suspects the student is memorizing the story.
Example: This story was written
for a Basic Literacy student reading
on
the third grade level.

"Uncle Bill"
Since he was sixty-five, all of Uncle Bill's relatives thought it
was time Uncle
Bill retired. Uncle Bill was aging well, but it was hard for him
to walk to work
every day.
Since Uncle Bill trusted his relatives he told his boss at work it was time
he
retired. Uncle Bill's boss did not want to see him go, since Uncle
Bill was such a
good worker. In fact, Uncle Bill's boss thought Uncle Bill was
the best worker
he had at the store. He would show up for work every day, begin
work right on
time, and always do a good job.
But Uncle Bill's boss did not fight with Uncle Bill about his retirement.
In fact,
his boss threw a retirement party for Uncle Bill. His boss and
all his co-workers
were there, and many of his relatives came too. Uncle Bill had
a big smile on his
face when he saw everyone, and he enjoyed his retirement presents very
much.
After his retirement party Uncle Bill thought about what he would like to do
now that he was retired. First, he would fix things around the
house. His wife
had wanted him to fix the front gate and the back fence for some time
now.
Second, Uncle Bill decided he would begin to spend more time with his
grandchildren. Third, Uncle Bill wanted to take his wife on trips.
She had
always wanted to travel, and now they had the time.
